Tips and advice
What is SEO? A simple explanation for business owners
What does SEO mean?
SEO is short for search engine optimisation, in Norwegian “søkemotoroptimalisering”. Put simply: the work of getting your website as high as possible in the normal search results on Google, the ones not marked as ads.
The difference from Google ads is that you don't pay per click. On the other hand, it takes longer before you see results.
How does Google decide the order?
Google tries to show the best answer to what people search for. Simply put, Google looks at three things:
- The content: Does your page clearly answer what was searched for?
- The user experience: Is the page fast, secure and easy to use on mobile?
- Trust: Do other websites link to you, and do you come across as a real business with good information?
Five things you can do yourself
- Write what customers search for. Not “Total provider of plumbing and heating services”, but “Plumber in Hamar – we come the same day”.
- One page per service. A separate page on bathrooms, one on heat pumps and one on leaks makes it easier to be found for each of them.
- Good titles and descriptions. The title is the blue text people see in Google. It should say what you do and where.
- A fast website that works on mobile. Large images are the most common reason for slow pages.
- Get links from local sites: the local newspaper, the sports club you sponsor, suppliers and partners.
Local SEO: the quickest win
For local businesses, it is often the map at the top of Google that brings the most customers. That is controlled by your Google Business Profile, not just your website. Read our guide on how to get on the map.
SEO or ads?
The best is often both. Ads bring customers today, while SEO builds up and brings free visits over time. Many start with ads to get sales going, and work on SEO alongside.

FAQ
How long does SEO take?
Usually several months before you see clear results, depending on how much competition there is for your keywords.
Can I pay Google to rank higher in the normal results?
No. You can only pay for ads, which are marked as sponsored. Your position in the normal results can't be bought.
Do I need to write a blog to get good SEO?
Not necessarily, but articles that answer questions your customers ask are a good way to be found for more searches.
What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?
SEO is about the normal search results and is free per click, but takes time. Google Ads are paid ads that show straight away.
